I kicked off my little gastoronomical experiment at Parkway Deli. I lived in South Florida, an area with many transplanted Jewish New Yorkers who opened authentic Jewish delis near the beach. Because of this, I know a good Reuben when I eat it. I was skeptical that a decent Jewish deli could exist in the D.C. area, but I was wrong.
Parkway Deli is all that and a bag of knish.

The deli is in a small shopping center off Grubbs Road near East West Highway. Parking is crazy, as the deli shares a crowded parking lot with the Silver Spring Co-Op, a Chinese joint and some other shops. Once I got inside, it was even more crowded. The wait for a dine-in seat was about 30 minutes and I was starving so I ordered take-out. It took about 10 minutes. Sweet.
I ordered the turkey pastrami on multigrain with Russian dressing, a side of cole slaw and a black and white cookie. The food was good - definitely no complaints. Everything tasted fresh and the cook didn't skimp on the meat like at some other sub shops that will remain nameless (*cough* Subway). The Cole Slaw wasn't too sweet or too tangy and soupy. They even threw in a dill pickle for free. The cookie wasn't that great. A little too hard and didn't taste terribly fresh, but still edible.
I'll probably come back here. Though the parking sucked and the pushy Early Bird crowd and flustered waitstaff soured the dine-in experience a bit, the takeout option made it worth it. Much better than that other sub shop that will remain nameless (*cough* Subway).
Grade: B+
Total meal cost: $10.97
